Yacht Pipit

Captain Andrew MacKellar, R.D., R.N.R. - a little piece of family history.

My namesake Great Uncle had a long and illustrious career with Cunard, culminating as Master of the Queen Mary. He was surely destined to become Master of the Queen Elizabeth, but sadly died before this ambition could be fulfilled. Unfortunately I never met him as he died a few years before I was born, but my older brother and sister did meet him at Southampton on one occasion. His widow Phoebe came to stay with us in the UK a number of times.

Ann has in fact been aboard the Queen Mary when she lived in California, and particularly remembers the Art Deco interior.

Andrew joined the Cunard Line in 1924. His first passenger liner command was the Ascania in 1950.  In 1954 he was the master of the Saxonia when she made her maiden voyage. He had also commanded the Carinthia and Caronia and served aboard the Ivernia. He was appointed to command the Queen Mary in August 1958.

So my Great Uncle was Master of some of the finest ocean liners ever built, culminating in arguably the finest of them all; I, on the other hand, am 'Master' of a Bavaria 36!

Below are a number of links to information about Andrew and a number of ships he commanded - if you have any information in which you think I would be interested I'd be delighted to hear from you.
